DroopyBoops
Once upon a time .........

Mike and Rick first started their writing partnership in 1964, turning out massive hits like "Ebenezer", "Alley Alley", "Little Jackie Monday" etc. and earning an aluminium disc for their ground-breaking album "This Is To Certify".

The Droopy Boops were created in Rick's back bedroom (or was it Mike's garden shed?) Wherever it was, it led to Mike and Rick mounting a search for talent to front the band.

One small advert in Womans Weekly resulted in a flood of very attractive knitting patterns and scores of letters from would be Droopys.

In the end, Mike and Rick narrowed the list down to fourteen lucky people, all of whom are featured here.

We would like to say they all lived happily ever after, but unlike most fairy tales this ending is dotted with tragedy. Jesse Faggott, Frankie Le Moan and Slime Regis all perished in the same evening, after fighting over a single order of egg and chips at the Cracked Saucer Caff on the A1, just south of Scotch Corner. Fittingly, The Cracked Saucer is the venue for the annual Droopyfest Re-union Concert that the surviving members attend as a mark of respect for their less fortunate associates..

After Slime (Rowleys' Story)

After Slime Regis died so suddenly, it left his backing band – The Drain Blockers – in quite a pickle. Not at all sure that their brand of R&B versions of English rugby songs would be accepted from a less accomplished vocalist, they started out on the long and thankless search for a replacement.

Their panic was short lived, however, as Slime’s youngest daughter - Rowley - had followed her Dad’s every move since she was 3 years old. Just a few lyric changes to suit a female presenter and they were off and running.

Although content to sing the bawdiest of ditties to a mixed audience, Rowley thought the bands name was far too crude for the Working Mans Club circuit and suggested a change. They argued the point for months before deciding on what was to become the iconic Rowley Regis and The Unblocked.

The rest, as they say, is history. They made one album together – Drains – which almost got released. No longer ‘flavour of the month’ they managed to earn a living of sorts performing at children’s parties and busking. Rowley went back to her day job as a prostitute and was last seen at Strensham Services selling copies of her ill-fated unreleased record from the trunk of her Dad’s old Chevy. As a fitting post script to this sad story the Chevy's personalised number plate - R3GIS - was sold on eBay for £12.50 in December 2002. No one was sure who the seller was but their eBay screen-name was RowleyTheHooker.

Excerpt from an interview with  Chubby Flicker - recorded in 1995.

As I remember it. Jesse, Frankie and Slime could only scrape up two bob between them and egg and chips plus one cup of coffee was on the menu at one and ninepence. They decided to buy one between them with Jesse having the egg and Frankie and Slime sharing the chips. Jesse stood in the queue while Frankie and Slime went for a pee.

Frankie got back first to discover that Jesse had already eaten the egg and most of the chips. Frankie’s sugar levels were on the floor so you can imagine how pissed off he was feeling. Without a word he hit Jesse on the back of the head with a metal barstool and calmly sat down to eat the remaining chips while Jesse bled to death on the floor underneath the table.

Slime, having missed all the action returned from the toilet area to see Frankie apparently finishing off the chips. Not seeing Jesse, he assumed that Frankie had eaten the lot. In a blind rage, Slime grabbed the mug of coffee with the intent of drinking the lot. Sadly he tripped over Jesse’s feet and spilled the hot beverage down the cleavage of a young woman who was being accompanied by three Hell’s Angels.

The last I saw of them was as the Angels dragged one Droopy each off into the sunset. The following day the police found a funeral pyre with three unrecognisable bodies on it. We were asked to identify the bodies but the only things we had to go on were their rings and jewellery. Someone had removed all the teeth from the bodies – probably because of the gold ones that Jesse was sporting – so the usual forensics of the day would not suffice.

Some years later there were rumours that Jesse, Frankie and Slime were seen working as a trio in Rio, but every time the police or the press caught up to them they had mysteriously melted away. People kept reporting the haunting sound of three Harleys in the distance - perhaps we'll never know what really happened.
